Stages of the Redevelopment
The redevelopment of the Otago Settlers Museum will
take place in four stages and is expected to be
completed by December 2012.
Stage one
The new storage building is currently under
construction and will house the collections that are
not on display. The building is essentially a
warehouse providing secure, museum quality
environmentally and work spaces.
Stage two and three
The cluster of buildings that make up the current
Museum - the 1907/08 brick Burnside building and the
1903 streamline concrete New Zealand Road Services
building - all will be upgraded to meet modern code
regulations and to provide acceptable standards for
museum display.
The buildings will be fitted with sprinkler systems
and climate control. Once these building are brought
up to modern standards, the Museum will fit new
exhibitions throughout.
Stage four
The final stage will be the addition of a new foyer
to the front of the building facing the Railway
Station end. The Museum's train Josephine will take
pride of place in the foyer. Additional facilities,
including a small auditorium will be part of this
final stage.
